Our Story

How a walk past a bin changed everything

Daily Foodie started with one simple, uncomfortable observation — and grew into South Africa's first food rescue marketplace.

The moment that started it all

Walking past the bins behind a popular Vaal Triangle restaurant at closing time, our founder watched kitchen staff bag up dozens of untouched meals for the skip. "There were people hungry in the same street," he later wrote in his diary. That image never left him.

The research phase

After months of conversations with restaurateurs, bakeries and supermarket managers, one truth kept surfacing: food waste was expensive for businesses too. Not just morally — but financially. The cost of ingredients, labour and disposal was hurting margins. There had to be a better way.

Daily Foodie launches

We soft-launched in the Vaal region with just four partner stores. Within a month, over 1 000 users had signed up and 500 Surprise Bags had been rescued. The community response was overwhelming — and that gave us the confidence to grow.

Growing the network

We expanded to new cities and onboarded dozens of new food businesses — from artisan bakeries to hotel kitchens and grocery chains. Our user community grew past 7 000 registered food rescuers, saving hundreds of tonnes of CO₂ in the process.

The vision ahead

Our goal is to make Daily Foodie the go-to food rescue platform for every city in South Africa. We are building tools, partnerships and community programs that make waste the exception, not the rule.
